On August 17, 2010 the Department of Labor (DOL) announced that Smartsoft International, Inc. has agreed to pay nearly $1 million in back wages and interest to 135 H-1B workers. The DOL's Wage and Hour Division determined that the company violated the rules of the H-1B program by not paying some H-1B employees any wages at the beginning of their employment, paying some employees on a part-time basis even though they were hired under a full-time employment agreement, and paying some employees less than the prevailing wage required for the particular geographical location where the work took place. Smartsoft International, Inc. is a computer consulting company based in Suwanee, Georgia, and also has offices in Sunnyvale, California and Brunswick, New Jersey.
