CIS has announced that the effective date of the final rule requiring federal contractors and subcontractors to begin using the E-Verify system has been delayed to September 8, 2009 (it was previously supposed to have gone into effect on June 30, 2009).
Under the rule, federal contracts will contain a clause committing government contractors awarded contracts worth $100,000 or more (and subcontractors, where over $3,000 in services or construction are involved) to use E-Verify. Companies awarded a contract by the federal government will be required to enroll in E-Verify within 30 days of the contract award date. E-Verify is an electronic system designed to enable employers to confirm that their employees are legally authorized to work in the United States.
