U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Serves 652 Businesses With Audit Notices to Inspect I-9 Files

July 1, 2009

Nationwide today, 652 businesses have been served with Notices of Inspection (NOIs) from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These business were selected based on information obtained through other investigatory means. The NOIs notify the employers that ICE will be inspecting their I-9 records to ensure compliance with lawful hiring practices. The issuance of 652 notices in one day is a clear signal from ICE that it intends to exercise its inspection powers in order to prohibit illegal employment. Last year (FY 2008), only 503 NOIs were issued during the course of the entire year.
