Foreign students who complete
a course of studies (usually a bachelor's or master's degree) will often have
one year of work authorization called "optional practical training"
(OPT). These students can work for any
employer in their field for the one year period and the employer does not have
to file any papers with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) or
get any advance permission to hire the student. The company does not have to provide
"training," as such; mere employment in the field is acceptable. Currently a plastic laminated "employment
authorization document" (EAD) evidences USCIS’ approval of practical
training of this type. Additionally, "curricular
practical training" may entitle the employee to work under conditions
which will be noted on the foreign student form (the "I-20" form) as
to duration and number of hours. The
school official approves this type of employment authorization.
